The Invisible Library

A few years ago when I read Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine, the first book in the Great Library series, I did a blog post about how I love books about books. This is definitely still the case. I love relating to characters that have the same love as me for books and reading and literature.

"She was a Librarian, and the deepest, most fundamental part of her life involved a love of books. Right now, she wanted nothing more than to shut the rest of the world out and have nothing to worry about except the next page of whatever she was reading."

The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman is about Irene, this Librarian that comes from the Library, a place between realities that collects important works of fiction that connect alternate realities. For this specific mission, Irene is sent with her new apprentice, Kai to an alternate London to retrieve a book. But when they arrive, it's already been stolen and several factions are all in search of it.

To make matters worse, the world they have traveled to is chaos-infested (that is, the world doesn't follow the typical rules) and fae and werewolves and vampires and magic all exist here. While there, she meets up with a few old friends and makes a few new ones all while discovering that Kai is keeping secrets from her.

Irene will tackle head-on all sorts of dangerous situations on her mission to find this book that is vital in the Library's hold on reality.

I absolutely adored the world-building in this book. I'll be honest that at first the rules and magic behind the Library can be a little confusing. But it was totally worth it because by the end of the book I just want to live in the Library and visit all of the alternate worlds and be a Librarian like Irene, searching for unique and important books!

Irene makes for a great protagonist. She is a strong, capable woman who takes charge of the mission but still genuinely cares for people and does her best to not hurt others in her pursuit of literature. She has a conscience which is more than can be said for some of the other Librarians we meet in the story. But Irene also understands the importance of teamwork and she accepts the skills and contributions of Kai, even when he might not be telling her the truth about everything. Kai is also a super likable character who has strong morals. He is also extremely protective of Irene as his mentor and does what he can to keep them both safe in dangerous situations. I love the teamwork they have between them.

And luckily, at the end of this book, we don't have to be done with Irene and Kai because this is just the first book in a long series. I believe there are now 5 books in the series! I'm definitely planning on getting my hands on the rest of them. But you can purchase a copy of the first book here!

This series would be great for book lovers and fantasy lovers especially but I highly recommend it for anyone looking for some magical fiction to read.
