Part of Your World

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if all those Disney movie fairy tales didn't have happy endings?

Well, in Liz Braswell's Twisted Tales series, that's exactly what we find out. She has written several of these books that tell us what would have happened if Aladdin never found the lamp, what if the sleeping beauty never woke up, or what if Belle's mother was the one that cursed the Beast?

The one I was the most interested in though is her take on The Little Mermaid. This one is called Part of Your World and in it, we find the story of what has happened since Ariel wasn't able to defeat Ursula when she disguised herself as Vanessa and captured King Trident, leaving Ariel permanently without a voice.

It seems like the story takes place about 5-6 years after Ariel's defeat. She is now Queen of the Sea and has learned some form of Atlantian sign language which is super fun! Ursula/Vanessa still has Prince Eric and much of their kingdom under a spell where she rules with an iron fist. Ariel has always assumed that Ursula killed her father but when Scuttle, the trusty seagull, discovers otherwise and reports back to Ariel, she knows that she needs to do something to save her father. But is that all she wants? Did she learn her lesson the last time when she fell in love with Eric?

I thought this was a really fun book. As far as I can tell, this book is meant to be a YA book. But honestly, I would recommend this book more for adults who grew up with the Disney movies. I think that this helps us relate more to the story. It is also more of an adult book because of the writing style and I, an English teacher, found myself looking up quite a few vocabulary words. The content though is just fine for YA and even middle grade ages.

I think it's very interesting to see the characters from a different light. We get to see even more from the characters that we loved like Flounder, Sebastian, Ariel's sisters. Even Prince Eric didn't get to show much of his personality in the movie. You really feel more connected to them than before. With this book, we get to see more of their adventures and how they will do anything to help Ariel get another chance at her happily ever after.

I recommend this book and the rest of the series to anyone looking for an updated fairy tale or who loves those Disney movies from their childhood.

My daughter brought the Beauty and the Beast one home from school, but I only got to read the first few chapters before she took it back. I'll have to see if the library has these! She said she enjoyed it.
