Calling All Percy Jackson Fans!!
I know that there are so many people out there who are fans of Rick Riordan's work--Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Trials of Apollo, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, The Kane Chronicles, The Heroes of Olympus, etc.
I haven't read all of them, but I do enjoy the style. What a great way to introduce kids to mythology! They learn about different cultures and religions through the eyes of other kids going on adventures. The books have all become popular because of the humorous and fun take they bring to the mythology.
I recently discovered that Rick Riordan has worked with Disney-Hyperion publishing to create a branch of books similar to his--but written by other authors.
This has lead to series like the Pandava series by Roshani Chokshi or Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee. Just like Riordan's books are influenced by other cultures and history, these are as well. I love that they are written by authors that are familiar with these cultures--it gives it a lot of credibility behind the fiction.
That's why I was really excited to get a hold of this book: The Storm Runner by J.C. Cervantes.
"A lonely boy in New Mexico has a physical disability that makes middle school feel even more like everyone is watching him. But as he soon learns, his physical differences are merely the first clue to a family history that connects him to the Maya gods—and puts him in mortal danger."
I'll tell you that in some ways it is very similar to Rick Riordan's series. This young boy deals with a disability and then discovers that he is related to the gods. However, this time instead of Greek mythology it is Mayan mythology. I think since most people aren't as familiar with Mayan mythology as they are with Greek mythology, which means that Cervantes had a lot of work cut out for her.
The adventure that Zane Obispo embarks on is filled with a lot of danger but also fun and humor. If you have read all of Rick Riordan's series and need something to fill the void--this book is it! The styles are so similar and it is just another way to learn about mythology in an engaging way.
I definitely give this book 5 Stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
