Amazing Moms!
Fantasy stories are usually about young men and women setting off on adventures. But this week I had the wonderful opportunity to read fantasy stories written about MOMS!
The protagonists of these stories are mothers who experience love, loss, and sacrifice as they bring children into the world, defend their little ones, and try to keep their families safe--the exact thing that women and mothers experience in our world without magic.
Moms constantly battle the struggles of raising children and combating evil that threatens families. Because of this, as a woman and a mother, I was able to relate to so many things as I read these stories. I was reminded of the love and joy that I find in being a mom--but also the fear and sorrow that can come from it as well. I was so impressed by the ability that these authors had to capture it all and in such unique ways. It, of course, comes from their own experiences as mothers.
To be more specific--I had the pleasure of reading an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of Beyond Instinct which is a fantasy anthology (a collection of stories, if you aren't familiar) about MOMS! How fun is that?
These fantasy stories were very different from the traditional fantasy story because of their focus on moms (something I really don't think I've seen before) and I think that is why I enjoyed them so much!
There are five short stories. Some of them are debut stories so I think that is something you need to keep in mind as you read this book. But there is a wide range within these stories:
-A widowed mother spends the night in the forest with her child fighting against predators "in both the waking and dreaming worlds."
-A grieving mother wolf finds a way to heal by raising a fawn despite her instincts.
-"Myra is an earth-spirit, gifted with the magical ability to connect with animals. When her village is attacked, she escapes with her son only to discover that a powerful overlord will do anything to hunt her down."
-A mother tries to avoid her past while her daughter willfully runs towards it and the danger that it involves.
-A pregnant mother flees her abusive husband and discovers her mother's tribe among warrior women where she must learn their secrets and experience the joy and pain of entering motherhood.
If you are a mom and you're looking like a fantasy story that you can really relate to, this is definitely a book to check out! Let me know if you do decide to read it because I'm interested in hearing the thoughts of others!
This book is available as an ebook on Amazon starting on Dec. 14th--just a few days away! Totally worth the $2.99.
Since it's an anthology, there are several authors of whom I've included their biographies from the book:
Morgan J. Muir
She lives in Utah with her fantastic husband, three offspring, and as many cats...She grew up riding horses and motorcycles and listening to her grandmother read poetry. She will read any sci-fi/fantasy novel she can get her hands on. Follow her @morganjmuir and www.morganjmuir.com.
Marlena Money
She lives in Utah where she teaches her kids at home and in the classroom. She is an artist and enjoys bringing her stories to life with drawings as well as a keyboard. The stories in her mind first came to life as a youth when she lived in the mountains and roamed the woods like they were her backyard. Follow her: www.deviantart.com/xakriuth
Christa Meisman
Christa has always been an energetic soul. Her growing up years were filled with past-bedtime reading, song and story writing, living room dancing, and elaborate pretending. She had to grow up sometime, so now she channels her creativity as a hairdresser, wife and mother, and a very pleased first-time published author. Follow her: www.facebook.com/christameismanauthor
Rachel White
She has lived in Utah all her life and has been writing fiction nearly as long. "Starsworn" is her ebut published work, and as long as her husband, three children, and over-anxious dog cooperate there will certainly be more to come. Watch for audio narration projects with her name on them as well! Follow her: @Rachel_V_White and www.facebook.com/RachelVirginiaWhite
Bree Moore
She lives in Utah with her amazing husband and five children. She writes fantasy novels between doling out cheerios and folding laundry. In real-life, Bree works as a birth doula, attending women in pregnancy and labor, which is huge inspiration for her writing.
