Books about Books
I have to say that one of my favorite types of books to read are books about books. Books like:
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
The Neverending Story by Michael Ende
They always capture what it is like to be caught up in a story or to fall in love with books and the influence they have over people. The reader can often find themselves in the characters who love books or who are just discovering the wonderful world of literature.
In that same vein, I just finished:
Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
It tells the tale of a mysterious man and his 24-Hour bookstore. It's purpose and the people who enter to buy its books are fascinating and they draw you into the story. It is "DaVinci Code"-esc in the fact that it ties into a long history of reading and secret codes. It's extremely easy to get caught up in the book and long to search for answers about Mr. Penumbra and this bookstore that never closes just like the main character. It may not be the type of mystery book that many people are hoping for but I found it intriguing and was compelled to read.
It's a fairly short book and reading it came quickly. I like the author's style a lot and hope to find other books by him as well. I recommend this book to those who love reading, who love books about books, who love mysteries, as well as those looking for some light reading. It's definitely worth it so that you can get to know Mr. Penumbra and his bookstore.
